The novel all of us students were to read was "Their Eyes Were Watching God" which revolved around a women (Janie) journey through her many relationships during the span of her life and what she has been through. Through out the entire text Janie takes us through how her younger self fell for a black man. Janie also explains how her grandmother was a huge part in her life and would have done anything to protect her and have her making good decisions. One thing that her grandmother was concerned about was how Janie being able to pick someone who could take care of her and who she will marry in the future.

Her personal anecdotes created such a strong idea on what gender and race was for many readers. The article tells readers about how her husbands would treat her from being a female. Joe, who was her first husband would want her cooking and sometimes giving him a helping hand while he was off getting animals. After that marriage she then married another African American man. He was they type to have her working less and instead rather her work in the house by cleaning.

Since Janie had a lighter complexion then most other African American women, she was viewed as beautiful.

For my second columnist I chose Leonardo Pitts Jr. Some of Leonardos favorite rhetorical device he would use was adding some personal anecdotes and logos. In many of his articles he discussed the reality situation between the police and African Americans and he give his honest input in some of those cases.

When my columnist begins adding logos the purpose for that is to prove and support his statements.

Overall, besides the struggle of having to complete the essay while keeping up with my columnist and other assignments I believe I learned a lot more about culture identity along with race/gender. The articles we have read and the discussions we would have had me knowing the basics of how both identities can make up a persons identity. One thing I loved during this quarter was when we had to read some of the articles from 50 essays on many individuals life on how there identity was and how they thought about identity. I found the stories interesting and somewhat have a powerful meaning to what they think about their identity. one thing I did not like about this quarter is having to do that synthesis paper. The process was long and tiring for everyone including myself.
